Made in Garston

Artworks studio and gallery was established by Garston based artist Alex Corina 3 years ago in order to provide affordable studio space to local artists and creatives. The project was then taken a step further with the launch of campaign to establish Garston as a Cultural Village.

Alex says “The Campaign is about redefining Garston with art and the creative industries at the heart of its transformation, regenerating it as an integral part of the Capital of Culture 2008 celebrations.”

Artworks recently commissioned a number of artists to explore the theme of Liverpool in the run up to 2008. Incorporating the spirit and humour of the city The Capital of Culture Series was the result. Limited edition prints of the series were also produced as part of the Artworks Print Club.

At present we have a total of 43 works of art in our collection. This collection changes on a monthly basis and we continue to seek unique and contemporary art to display and offer for sale.

New additions to our Collection

The prints below will be available from the 15th June 2007. Limited edition of 200.

Alex Corina has just added two more prints to the Print Club Collection. ‘God gave us Gerard' is the second football themed print within the Capital Of Culture Collection. This picture brings together popular culture that combines Michelangelos Classical Painting of the Sistine Chapel, with a celebration of Steven Gerards talent and achievement.

The second print entitled 'Beatles Reunited' shows the Beatles reunited for one last gig at the cavern joining the hundreds of thousands of people who make the pilgrimage annually to Liverpool and particularly the cavern. The Beatles reunited depicts the Beatles as they were in the 60s in the cavern and combines again the Mona Lisa but this time four of them in a classical (framed) print as a masterpiece would be.

Alex Corina stood for election to Liverpool City Council to protest at the way the city is preparing to be European Capital of Culture in 2008. He received a total of 316 votes.
Alex's campaign explored politics as art in the run up to the local elections rendering the political campaign as an artistic experience and a creative dialogue. Thousands of Liverpool households received a free work of art through the letterbox in the city's most unusual local election campaign in May 2007.

Alex described his approach as "an artistic intervention" as well as a conventional political campaign.
Inspired by Edvard Munch's "The Scream" the picture is a mixture of cartoon and collage highlighting  "Liverpool's litany of letdowns" since it secured the Capital of Culture title in June 2003.

In the foreground is the madness of the Big Dig and a hole full of Lamb Banana's waiting to create cultural havoc ( if given half a chance) In the background the Liverbuilding and the River Mersey, the trams, the Cloud and even Everton FC are being sold down the River amid the chaos and the early departure of the Capital Of Cultures Australian artistic director (notice the sign post).

The Liverpool Scream is the result.
